Ultra-rapid charging hubs deliver 150 kW or more of DC power, with the best hardware capable of 350 kW to 400 kW. At those speeds, a large-battery EV can add 100 miles of range in 15 to 20 minutes. There are now 13,346 ultra-rapid chargepoints on the UK public network (up 40% year-on-year), concentrated at dedicated hubs operated by GRIDSERVE, IONITY, MFG EV Power, Tesla, Fastned and Osprey. What counts as ultra-rapid?
Zap-Map classifies ultra-rapid as 150 kW and above. Any charger in this category uses DC (direct current) and communicates with your car via the CCS Combo 2 standard. CHAdeMO is absent from ultra-rapid tiers, having been largely phased out at new installations. Tesla’s V3 Superchargers deliver up to 250 kW; the latest GRIDSERVE and MFG hardware peaks at 350 to 400 kW. The practical limit is your car’s peak acceptance rate, a car rated for 135 kW will not benefit from a 350 kW charger.
The best ultra-rapid hub operators
1. GRIDSERVE Electric Forecourts
GRIDSERVE’s six Electric Forecourt flagship sites are the best EV charging destinations in the UK by amenity and power. Each has 24 or more charging bays at up to 350 kW, plus Costa Coffee, Wi-Fi, children’s activities and toilets. The locations are:
- Braintree (Essex)
- Norwich (Norfolk)
- Stevenage (Hertfordshire)
- London Gatwick Airport (West Sussex)
New Super Hub sites opening through late 2026 with GRIDSERVE hardware at Extra MSA locations (Beaconsfield, Baldock, Cambridge, Cobham, Cullompton, Leeds Skelton Lake, Peterborough) add 400 kW-capable hardware and 12 to 20+ bays per site. Pricing is around 75p per kWh PAYG contactless. GRIDSERVE does not charge a monthly membership fee but its free app gives better session management.
Why they stand out: The combination of 400 kW hardware, multiple simultaneous bays, and coffee-and-toilet amenities makes these sites genuinely competitive with a petrol station stop for a 20-minute charge.
2. IONITY stations
IONITY operates 788 ultra-rapid chargers across the UK, all between 150 kW and 350 kW. Sites are at Extra motorway services, village hotel locations and retail parks. IONITY hardware quality is high and reliability is generally good.
Standout IONITY sites include Cobham (M25), Reading (M4), Exeter (M5) and various village hotel locations where drivers can eat inside while the car charges in the car park.
IONITY’s biggest selling point for regular long-distance drivers is price. The PAYG rate of 74p per kWh is competitive, and the annual Power plan at 43p per kWh is the lowest published rate on any major UK ultra-rapid network. For a car adding 40 kWh per session, the Power plan saves over £12 per stop versus PAYG. The annual commitment and higher monthly fee mean this plan only pays for itself at around three or more sessions per month.
Why they stand out: Best per-kWh rate for subscribers; ultra-high hardware power at motorway-convenient locations.
3. MFG EV Power forecourt hubs
Motor Fuel Group has turned 170+ of its forecourt fuel stations into rapid and ultra-rapid charging hubs, with hardware running from 150 kW to 360 kW. MFG operates more rapid and ultra-rapid chargepoints (around 2,866) than any other single UK operator, making it the most physically distributed ultra-rapid network in the country.
MFG’s sites benefit from existing forecourt infrastructure: 24-hour access, toilets, convenience stores and lighting. Pricing is around 79p per kWh PAYG with no subscription fee or membership needed.
Why they stand out: The widest ultra-rapid geographic reach of any network, including smaller towns and A-road locations where GRIDSERVE and IONITY are absent.
4. Tesla Supercharger V3
Tesla’s V3 Superchargers deliver up to 250 kW and are installed at around 600 Supercharger sites across the UK, including selected motorway services, retail parks and Tesla showroom locations. For Tesla drivers, these are the gold standard: fastest speeds, lowest prices (22p to 30p per kWh), and the best reliability record in the UK.
Since 2025, roughly half of UK Supercharger sockets are accessible to non-Tesla EVs via CCS connections. Non-Tesla pricing is around 45p to 56p per kWh, which remains competitive compared to GRIDSERVE’s PAYG rate. Availability for non-Tesla users varies by site.

5. Fastned
Fastned operates around 226 chargers across the UK at stations near motorways and A-roads, recognisable by their distinctive bright yellow canopies. All Fastned stations offer ultra-rapid hardware (up to 300 kW), and many have CCS and CHAdeMO. Fastned won the Zap-Map ‘Best EV charging network 2025’ award in the medium rapid/ultra-rapid network category.
PAYG pricing is approximately 79p per kWh. Fastned Gold membership at £9.99 per month gives 30% off, which at three sessions per month (25 kWh each) reduces the effective per-kWh rate to around 55p, breaking even versus the monthly fee.
Fastned’s key sites include Oxford Park and Ride, Colchester, Bristol, Manchester and a new indoor drive-through hub under construction in Aberdeen. The geographic footprint is smaller than GRIDSERVE or MFG, but reliability and hardware quality are strong.
