Cookie policy
What we store on your device, why, and how to change your mind whenever you like.

Your current choice
You can review or change your cookie preferences at any time using the button below. Non-essential cookies stay switched off until you actively accept them, and rejecting them is as easy as accepting them.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. We also use local storage, which works in a similar way. This policy covers both. We only place non-essential cookies with your consent, in line with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations and the UK GDPR.
Categories we use
Strictly necessary (always on)
These make the site work and cannot be switched off. They do not track you across other sites.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| ev-consent | Remembers your cookie choices so we do not ask on every page | 12 months |
| ev-theme | Remembers whether you chose light or dark mode | Until cleared |
| Netlify form tokens | Protects our forms against spam and duplicate submissions | Session |
Analytics (off by default)
Help us understand which articles are read and where visitors arrive from, so we know what to cover next. Data is aggregated and we do not use it to identify you personally.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics: distinguishes one visitor from another | 13 months |
| _ga_* | Google Analytics: keeps session state | 13 months |
Preferences (off by default)
Remember choices you make, such as saved articles or layout settings, so the site behaves the way you left it.
Advertising (off by default)
Used to measure the performance of advertising and affiliate links, to limit how often you see the same promotion, and, where you allow it, to make promotions more relevant. Some of these are set by third parties such as Google.
Consent Mode
We use Google Consent Mode v2. Before you choose, analytics and advertising storage are set to "denied" and no identifying cookies are written. When you make a choice, your settings are passed to any measurement tags so they behave accordingly. If you reject, tags either do not run or run in a cookieless mode that does not store data on your device.
Third-party content
Some articles embed content from other services, such as video players or social posts. Those providers may set their own cookies once the embed loads, and their own policies apply. Where possible we load embeds only after you have given consent.
Managing cookies in your browser
As well as our banner, you can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and most browsers offer a "do not track" or private browsing mode. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working properly, including remembering your cookie choice.
How long consent lasts
We keep a record of your choice for 12 months, then ask again. Clearing your browser storage will also make the banner reappear.
