When towing a typical caravan, expect around 130 to 160 miles between charges.

What are the trade-offs with long-range electric SUVs?

Weight. Most large-battery SUVs weigh 2,200 to 2,500 kg. This affects handling, tyre wear and energy consumption when accelerating. A 2,400 kg SUV requires notably more energy to reach 70 mph than a 1,900 kg saloon.

Charging time. A 110 kWh battery takes longer to charge than a 79 kWh one, even at the same charging rate. A 10 to 80 per cent charge at 200 kW takes around 25 to 30 minutes for a 100 kWh battery; the same operation on a 79 kWh battery at the same rate takes around 20 to 22 minutes.

Price. Long-range electric SUVs cluster around £55,000 to £80,000. There is no equivalent of the sub-£35,000 long-range hatchback in the large SUV category.

The common mistake: buying for WLTP, not for motorway use

An SUV rated at 400 miles WLTP will deliver around 280 to 310 miles at 70 mph in mild conditions. In winter with the heater running, that can drop to 230 to 270 miles. If you need to cover 250 miles on a cold January motorway run, a 400-mile WLTP SUV gives you a tighter margin than you might expect from the headline. Verify the motorway range specifically if that scenario applies to your use.
