Real-world range of 120 to 150 miles suits most UK commuting without anxiety. E-Pedal one-pedal driving is excellent. ProPilot adaptive cruise on higher trims is a genuine comfort on longer journeys.
What to check: Battery SoH is the priority. The Leaf uses air cooling, which is less protective than the liquid cooling found on later models. Use LeafSpy (a Bluetooth OBD2 dongle plus a free app, total cost under £20) to read exact SoH before buying. A Leaf with 90% SoH and 40,000 miles is a very good buy. A Leaf with 78% SoH and 30,000 miles is not, regardless of the low mileage.
Also confirm that the 40kWh battery is present, not the older 30kWh or 24kWh pack. Listings sometimes describe range without specifying battery size.
Avoid: Pre-2018 Leafs with 24kWh batteries. Real-world range is often 60 to 80 miles and the CHAdeMO rapid charging standard is becoming hard to find at public chargers.

3. BMW i3 (94Ah or 120Ah, 2017 onwards)

Battery durability has been very good. The liquid-cooled cells in the 94Ah and 120Ah versions have aged gracefully, and 80,000-mile examples regularly show 87% or higher SoH.
What to check: The i3 uses a range extender petrol engine (REX) on some variants. REX cars are slightly more complex to maintain and the petrol engine requires its own servicing. Decide whether you want the REX or pure electric version before searching. Check for tyre costs: the i3 uses unusual narrow high-profile tyres that are more expensive than standard sizes.
