What are the main running costs of owning a UK electric car?

There are six categories you need to think about:

  1. Charging (fuel equivalent) — by far the biggest variable

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

Home charging is the foundation of cheap EV running. On the standard Ofgem price cap rate of around 24.67p per kWh (Q2 2026), filling a 60 kWh battery costs roughly £15. At four miles per kWh — a fair real-world figure for most family EVs — that works out at about 6p per mile.

Switch to a dedicated EV off-peak tariff such as Octopus Go or OVO Drive Anytime and overnight rates drop to around 7 to 9p per kWh. A 60 kWh charge then costs closer to £5, and your per-mile cost falls to 2 to 2.5p. Over 10,000 miles a year, the difference between a standard tariff and an EV tariff is worth roughly £350 to £500.

The catch: you need off-street parking and a home charge point to access those rates. Renters and flat-dwellers who depend on public infrastructure face a very different calculation.

What do public chargers cost?

Public charging is significantly more expensive than home charging. According to Zap-Map’s April 2026 price index, the weighted average pay-as-you-go rate was 54p per kWh on slower AC chargers and 79p per kWh on rapid and ultra-rapid DC chargers. At four miles per kWh, that translates to 13.5p per mile on slower chargers and about 20p per mile on rapids.

A driver who does most of their charging on rapid public chargers is paying fuel costs that approach petrol-car levels. This is the single most misunderstood aspect of EV economics: home charging makes EVs cheap; public-only charging does not.

Subscription plans from networks such as BP Pulse, Pod Point, and Osprey can bring rapid-charging rates down, but require upfront monthly fees and are only cost-effective if you use them regularly.

Do electric cars pay road tax in 2026?

Yes. Electric cars were exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) until 31 March 2025. From 1 April 2025, DVLA began charging all zero-emission cars. The rates for 2026/27 are:

  • First year (new registrations from April 2026): £10
  • Standard rate (all EVs from year two): £200 per year
  • Expensive Car Supplement: £440 per year for five years if list price exceeds £50,000

The £50,000 threshold for the expensive car supplement was raised from £40,000 to £50,000 in November 2025, specifically for zero-emission cars. This means owners of cars that were between £40,000 and £50,000 and registered from 1 April 2025 will no longer pay the supplement from April 2026 onwards. An EV with a list price over £50,000 still attracts the supplement, giving a combined annual VED bill of £640.

Are electric cars cheaper to insure?

Not yet, on average. The typical EV insurance premium in the UK is around £560 to £650 per year, compared with around £487 for an equivalent petrol car — roughly a 15% premium. Specialist repair requirements, higher parts costs, and the residual uncertainty around battery damage after accidents all contribute.

That said, the gap is narrowing as insurers gain experience with EV claims and as more repair centres become EV-accredited. Some mass-market EVs — the Nissan Leaf, MG4, and Volkswagen ID.3 in lower trims — are now insuring at or below petrol equivalents. The cheapest EVs to insure tend to be smaller, lower-powered models in insurance groups 10 to 20.

How much does EV maintenance cost?

Electric cars have dramatically fewer moving parts than combustion-engine cars: no oil, no cambelt, no exhaust system, no clutch, and regenerative braking that reduces brake pad wear. Average annual servicing runs around £165 for an EV versus £205 for a petrol car, a saving of roughly 20%. Over five years that adds up to £200 saved on servicing alone.

Battery health checks are typically covered in manufacturer servicing plans and are not an additional line item. Tyre wear is worth watching: EVs are heavier and deliver instant torque, both of which increase tyre consumption. Budget an extra £50 to £100 per year compared with a lighter petrol car.

What about company car tax (BIK)?

EV company-car drivers enjoy very low Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates compared with petrol colleagues. In 2026/27 the BIK rate for a pure electric car is 4% of the car’s P11D value. A 40% taxpayer driving an electric car with a P11D of £40,000 pays:

£40,000 x 4% x 40% = £640 per year in company car tax

Compare that to a petrol car at the same P11D value with a 30% BIK rate:

£40,000 x 30% x 40% = £4,800 per year

The saving is substantial enough that salary sacrifice schemes — where employees give up gross salary in exchange for a company EV — remain one of the most tax-efficient ways to access a new electric car in 2026. BIK rates for EVs are confirmed through to 2029/30, reaching 9% — still well below petrol equivalents.

What is the true annual cost of running an EV?

Add the numbers together for a driver doing 10,000 miles a year, mostly on a home tariff:

A comparable petrol car doing the same mileage at 20p per mile in fuel alone costs £2,000 on fuel, plus £200 VED (petrol cars under 1.6L) or up to £365 for newer models, plus higher servicing. The EV advantage compounds over time, particularly for higher-mileage drivers.

The caveat is always upfront purchase price. EVs still cost more to buy outright than direct petrol equivalents, though the gap has closed considerably. The crossover point — where lower running costs outweigh the higher purchase price — typically arrives between three and five years of average UK driving.

What costs are changing soon?

The government has confirmed plans to introduce a pay-per-mile element to EV taxation from April 2028, currently proposed at around 3p per mile. For a driver covering 10,000 miles per year, that would add approximately £300 to the annual bill. The detail of how this will interact with VED is not yet legislated.
