What does “Find My EV” actually do?

That breadth is good news for buyers, but it also means the process of choosing can feel overwhelming before you’ve even looked at a single test drive.

It returns a filtered shortlist ranked by value and real-world fit, not by who paid the most for placement.

How the tool works: the five filters explained
1. Budget
Enter the maximum amount you want to spend, including any finance or leasing arrangement you already have in mind. The tool uses on-sale prices at the time of your search. Keep in mind that the average new electric car in the UK costs around £46,000, but the usable range below £30,000 has grown substantially: models like the Renault 5 E-Tech (from £22,995), the MG4 (from £26,995) and the Citroën e-C3 (from around £23,000) all sit in that bracket and cover most everyday needs.
If you are open to used, tick the used option and the tool searches from the wider used EV pool, where three-year-old Nissan Leafs and first-generation Kia e-Niros regularly appear under £18,000.
2. Body type
Select hatchback, SUV, estate, saloon, MPV or pickup. This matters because the UK’s roads and car parks are built around certain proportions: a full-size SUV is harder to park in central London than a supermini, while an estate gives you the boot space a family actually needs. The tool lists body type alongside each result so you can compare across categories if you want.
3. Weekly mileage
This is the most misunderstood filter. The typical UK driver covers around 127 miles per week, yet many buyers still reach for the longest-range model available. The tool converts your weekly mileage into a minimum useful battery size and filters out models that fall short, without pushing you towards more range than you need. If your weekly trips are all under 80 miles and you charge at home overnight, a 40-50kWh battery is usually enough. If you regularly drive 200-plus miles between charges on motorways, you need at least 70kWh and a car with a real-world efficiency of around 3 miles per kWh or better.
4. Home charging access
Whether you have off-street parking makes a significant difference to how convenient EV ownership is, though it no longer makes or breaks the case. If you can install a 7kW home wallbox, overnight charging on a cheap tariff such as Octopus Go (around 7p/kWh off-peak as of May 2026) brings your energy cost to roughly £400 a year for 10,000 miles. That compares with approximately £1,500 for the equivalent petrol spend. Without home charging, you rely on workplace chargers and the public network, which typically costs 45-85p/kWh at rapid and ultra-rapid points; the economics still work, but the tool flags cars with larger batteries (so you charge less often) and superior rapid-charging speeds.
5. Maximum charging speed needed
Not every buyer needs 150kW or 350kW rapid charging. If you do not take long motorway trips, a car that accepts only 50kW or 75kW DC is perfectly adequate. If you regularly drive from Manchester to London and back in a day, peak charging speed matters a great deal. The tool notes each car’s maximum DC rate so you can compare directly. As a guide: a 50kW charger tops up 100 miles of range in roughly 40 minutes; a 150kW charger does the same in about 12 minutes; 350kW chargers are now rolling out on the motorway network and add range in under 10 minutes on compatible cars.

The biggest mistake UK buyers make
Most people overestimate the range they need and underestimate the importance of charging speed.
Range anxiety is real, but it is also largely a first-time-buyer problem. Once you are used to plugging in at home like you charge a phone, you start almost every journey with a full battery. The question changes from “can I get there?” to “do I need to stop on the way, and if so, how quickly can I top up?”
Real-world range in UK conditions averages roughly 80% of the WLTP figure for mixed driving, and drops to around 65-70% in winter on motorways at 70mph. A car with a 300-mile WLTP rating delivers around 240 miles in mixed use and closer to 195-210 miles in cold motorway conditions. That still covers the London to Edinburgh run in a single stop for most modern 70kWh-plus cars.
The models that frustrate owners are not those with modest range, but those with slow DC charging speeds that make the stops last longer than they should. An older Nissan Leaf (24kWh or 30kWh) is limited to 50kW DC, meaning a rapid charge from 20% to 80% takes about 40 minutes. The Kia EV6, by contrast, accepts up to 240kW and covers the same state-of-charge window in around 18 minutes.
What to do after you have your shortlist
Once the tool has given you three to five cars that match your filters, the sensible next steps are:
Check real-world reviews. WLTP figures are set in controlled lab conditions. Independent real-world tests, particularly those conducted in UK winter conditions, show what the car actually delivers. Pay attention to efficiency figures in wh/mile (watt-hours per mile): anything below 280wh/mile is very efficient; above 350wh/mile means a bigger battery is doing more work.
Get a test drive with the actual battery state and route you care about. Take the car on your regular commute or a section of motorway you know. If the range estimate drops faster than expected in the first 10 miles, that tells you something.
Run the running cost comparison. Insurance, servicing and tyres vary between models. Electric cars have fewer mechanical parts, so servicing costs are lower, but tyre wear can be higher because of the extra torque and weight. We break this down in detail in our running cost calculator.
Think about tax. If you are buying through a company car scheme, the Benefit in Kind (BIK) rate for electric cars sits at 3% in 2026-27, rising to 7% in 2027-28.
