Quick answers

  • Since every zero-emission battery electric car carries the same 4% BIK rate in 2026/27, the only way to minimise your actual BIK tax bill is to choose a car with a lower P11D value. The P11D value is the car's original list price at first registration.
  • How BIK tax works for EVs in 2026/27: For reference, here is the BIK cost per year across different P11D values for the 2026/27 tax year.
  • Top company car EVs for low BIK in 2026: The MG4 SE Standard Range (51kWh) has a P11D value of approximately £26,995.
  • One important myth to correct: Many drivers assume PHEVs (plug-in hybrids) have lower BIK costs than fully electric cars.
  • Employer's perspective on low-BIK EVs: Employers providing EVs also benefit from lower Class 1A NI liabilities when the P11D value is lower.

Since every zero-emission battery electric car carries the same 4% BIK rate in 2026/27, the only way to minimise your actual BIK tax bill is to choose a car with a lower P11D value. The P11D value is the car’s original list price at first registration. BIK tax equals P11D value multiplied by 4%, then by your income tax rate. A car with a P11D of £25,000 costs a higher-rate taxpayer £400 per year in BIK. A car at £50,000 costs £800 per year. The models below offer the best combination of low-to-moderate P11D values, genuine range and real-world usability for UK company car drivers in 2026.

How BIK tax works for EVs in 2026/27

For reference, here is the BIK cost per year across different P11D values for the 2026/27 tax year.

P11D valueAnnual BIK (basic rate 20%)Annual BIK (higher rate 40%)Monthly BIK (40%)
£20,000£160£320£27
£25,000£200£400£33
£30,000£240£480£40
£35,000£280£560£47
£40,000£320£640£53
£50,000£400£800£67
£60,000£480£960£80

Even at the £60,000 P11D level, a higher-rate taxpayer pays just £80 per month in BIK. A petrol car at £40,000 and a typical 31% BIK rate costs the same driver £413 per month. The EV advantage is significant across every price point.

Top company car EVs for low BIK in 2026

1. MG4 SE Standard Range: lowest BIK in class

The MG4 SE Standard Range (51kWh) has a P11D value of approximately £26,995. This makes it the most tax-efficient non-budget electric company car available to UK drivers in 2026. A higher-rate taxpayer pays just £432 per year, or £36 per month, in BIK.

Range is 218 miles WLTP, which is sufficient for most daily commutes and regional business driving when combined with home or workplace charging. The standard range is not the car for drivers who regularly cover 150+ miles in a day without charging access, but for most company car drivers it is entirely adequate.

Annual BIK (40% taxpayer): £432 | Monthly: £36

2. MG4 SE Long Range: best value with proper range

The Long Range MG4 (77kWh) extends range to 323 miles WLTP from a P11D of around £29,995. For a higher-rate taxpayer, BIK rises to £480 per year or £40 per month. That is still a negligible cost for a car that can comfortably handle most business journeys in the UK without a midday charge.

The MG4’s interior is functional rather than luxurious, but the equipment level is strong for the price, and the Electric Car Grant applies to this model, reducing the lease cost.

Annual BIK (40% taxpayer): £480 | Monthly: £40

3. Vauxhall Corsa Electric: best small company car

The Vauxhall Corsa Electric starts from around £28,000, offering a P11D that keeps BIK very low. With 222 miles WLTP range, it suits urban and suburban company car drivers. The Corsa Electric qualifies for the Electric Car Grant. Boot space (309 litres) is on the small side, but for a pure city or commuter company car this is a strong and tax-efficient option.

Annual BIK (40% taxpayer): approx. £448 | Monthly: ~£37

4. Volkswagen ID.3 Pure Essential: best mid-size under £32k

The entry-level ID.3 Pure Essential starts at under £31,000, giving a P11D value that produces a BIK bill of under £500 per year for a higher-rate taxpayer. Range on the 58kWh battery is 260 miles WLTP. The ID.3’s ride quality, driver comfort, and refinement make it feel considerably more expensive than its P11D value suggests.

For company car drivers whose employer offers the full VW range, the ID.3 at this price point is a compelling entry.

Annual BIK (40% taxpayer): approx. £496 | Monthly: ~£41

5. Renault Megane E-Tech: best value mid-range EV

The Renault Megane E-Tech starts at around £33,495 for the Equilibre trim (60kWh, 280 miles WLTP). It offers a genuinely upscale interior for its price, fast charging at up to 130kW DC (10–80% in approximately 30 minutes), and a practical 440-litre boot. For business drivers who want something more polished than the MG4 at a P11D that keeps BIK low, the Megane E-Tech is a strong choice.

Annual BIK (40% taxpayer): approx. £536 | Monthly: ~£45

6. Kia EV3: best new entrant for 2026

The Kia EV3, arriving in UK showrooms during 2026, has a P11D expected to start at around £34,000. Early specifications suggest a 58.3kWh battery with 290+ miles WLTP range, a spacious interior for its size, and the benefit of Kia’s seven-year warranty. If confirmed pricing holds, the EV3 will offer strong competition to the ID.3 and Megane at a similar BIK cost.

Estimated annual BIK (40% taxpayer): ~£544 | Monthly: ~£45

7. Tesla Model 3 Standard Range (RWD): best premium compact for BIK value

The base Model 3 has a P11D of approximately £40,000 and delivers 305–310 miles WLTP. The BIK cost is £640 per year for a 40% taxpayer, or £53 per month. That buys access to the Supercharger network, over-the-air updates, and a Tesla badge. For company car drivers whose employer provides a premium car budget and wants to minimise the BIK liability, the entry Model 3 is hard to beat at this price.

Annual BIK (40% taxpayer): £640 | Monthly: £53

One important myth to correct

Many drivers assume PHEVs (plug-in hybrids) have lower BIK costs than fully electric cars. In most cases this is wrong. A typical PHEV in 2026/27 attracts a BIK rate of 12–14%. On a £35,000 PHEV, a higher-rate taxpayer pays £1,680–£1,960 per year in BIK. The equivalent fully electric car at £35,000 attracts BIK of just £560 per year. PHEVs have lost their BIK advantage decisively.

Employer’s perspective on low-BIK EVs

Employers providing EVs also benefit from lower Class 1A NI liabilities when the P11D value is lower. A fleet of 50 company cars at £30,000 P11D and 4% BIK generates a total BIK value of £60,000, with a Class 1A NI charge of £9,000 per year across the fleet. A petrol fleet at the same P11D and 30% BIK generates a Class 1A charge of £67,500. The employer’s saving is over £58,000 per year.

How we test and where our numbers come from

Range figures are official WLTP combined values taken from manufacturer UK specification pages, with real-world estimates drawn from independent comparative testing. Prices are UK list prices at the time of the latest update. Tax, grant and charging-scheme figures come from GOV.UK and HMRC publications. We re-check every guide when pricing, specification or policy changes. Last checked 11 August 2026.
